Lenape District Budget Defeated
Dear Lenape District Alumni Ambassador,
It is with disappointment that, on behalf of the administration and board of education, I share with you the news that voters in the Lenape Regional High School District yesterday defeated the proposed 2010/2011school budget. In response to a nearly 21 percent decrease in state aid totaling $6.5 million, we faced difficult choices but made every effort to minimize the impact on programs, services, staff and taxpayers.
I was optimistic about gaining voter approval of this year’s budget, based in part on the success of the prior two budgets in 2008 and 2009. Consecutive defeats of the Lenape District budgets in the previous six years led to cuts totaling $8.3 million. Despite those cuts, the Lenape District maintained core programs and is still one of the highest achieving districts in the state with graduation rates, SAT scores and other measures of success above state and national averages.
We are in a very difficult situation at this time, with limited options for cuts without having an impact on the educational program.
The district is now required to send the proposed budget to the township councils in the eight sending communities for their review and to determine what, if any, additional cuts will be made before the final budget is sent to the NJ Department of Education (NJDOE) for approval. The LRHSD administration will make recommendations to the township leadership, but if all eight communities cannot reach consensus, the proposed budget will be sent to the NJDOE for review and a final decision, which may not be reached until June 30.
Although the situation is very challenging, a silver lining in this year’s budget and board elections is the continued communication with and involvement of our parents, alumni, district retirees and community members. I am taking this opportunity to thank you and all of the Ambassadors for supporting the budget and, more important, for your unwavering commitment to the Lenape Regional High School District and our mission to provide a stellar education to our students.
The district has always received remarkable support from residents, alumni and our staff, even during difficult financial times. We have a lot to be proud of and the Ambassadors Programs give us an opportunity to foster communication and bolster pride in the Lenape District.
If you have any questions or concerns about the budget, please do not hesitate to contact Business Administrator Jim Hager, 609-268-2000, ext. 5535 or me, 609-268-2000, ext.5545. We appreciate your feedback and input.
Again, thank you!
Emily Capella

Teacher on Two Wheels
One man. One bicycle. Two years. Thousands of miles. Follow along as a teacher rides the earth in search of tailwinds, smooth roads, and students he can learn from.
Andrew Morgan (Class of 2000) is riding his bike and pulling his trailer from New Jersey to Argentina, then taking a freighter to South Africa, then riding to Egypt. You can follow his Blog to see what he is up to and where he has been. He is a teacher and stops at schools along the way. His blogs are interesting and well written, it is worth checking out. He has gear lists and stats on his trip. It's all pretty descriptive. Check it out, comment, sponsor him, tell your friends. It's a pretty cool trip.
Lenape District Television (LDTV) Live
Lenape District Television is the Edcational Access Station for the Lenape Regional High School District. LDTV broadcasts 24 hours a day and has potential viewership in communities across Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester counties in New Jersey.
The station's primary goal is to produce and air programming that is creative, informative, and instructional. The programming provides the community with information and insight regarding the district's four high schools (Lenape, Shawnee, Cherokee, and Seneca) as well as its sending elementary and middle schools.
Where Are They Now? We have also begun posting the programs as podcasts on iTunes.
Turf field makes debut at Cherokee
Thousands of young athletes in Evesham can display their skills on Cherokee High School's new synthetic turf field -- a field that had been controversial at times during planning. An opening ceremony of the new turf field was held at the Chiefs winning home opening football game against Lenape (27-0) on Sept. 17.
Volunteers Wanted
Are you a proud alum? Fan of this site? We could use your help! We're looking for one or two people who can help a couple hours each month to monitor the site, post reunion notices, send out announcements, and answer alumni e-mails. If you are interested, let us know.
BOYS LACROSS TEAM DONATES TO SUPPORT FOUNDATION
The Cherokee Boys Lacrosse Booster Club presented the two checks totaling $750.00 to the The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, The New Jersey Chapter. The boys had a fundraiser and wanted to made the donation in the names of Thomas Bolen and Kathy Rogers, both of Marlton, NJ. Tom passed away in March and Kathy passed away in April, both much too young. Tom’s son plays Lacrosse for our team, and Kathy was a valuable member of our community.
